American Bookbinders Museum

Mission

The American Bookbinders Museum tells the story of the book. We present the art and craft of western bookbinding, from a hand process in the 1600s through 19th century mechanization, by preserving the tools, craft and practices of bookbinding.

Featured Fun

For San Francisco History Days 2020, we invite you to Celebrate the 19th Amendment through our free, online exhibit, exploring Suffragists in Print.

Join the American Bookbinders in celebrating the centennial of the 19thamendment. Learn more about the women who fought with print to get the vote. Peruse newspapers, broadsheets, pamphlets, and cartoons, used to move the [male] voting public to pass woman’s suffrage: in California (1911), and later nationally (1920). See what the “Anti’s” published to discourage passage of women’s suffrage and learn more about women’s bookbinding and printing unions here in San Francisco.

Celebrate 100 years of women’s suffrage, California history and women’s labor unions.
