Barbara Wilcox
Barbara Wilcox is a journalist whose book, World War I Army Training by San Francisco Bay (Arcadia Publishing, 2016), is based on her Stanford thesis research. She learned of Camp Fremont from US Geological Survey scientists who were testing magnetometers over “Stanford’s World War I tunnels.”
San Francisco civic leaders brought a 30,000-man Army training camp to the Peninsula in 1917-18. Through tales of soldiers and civilians, VIPs and regular folks, men and women, the book explores Camp Fremont as a mirror of social tension and its influence on change and development in the Bay Area and the West.
